DIY Inspection Guide

Purpose
By inspecting your own boat, you become more familiar with it’s condition, its equipment and onboard systems. You learn the proper safety equipment to carry, and you verify that it is up-to-date and in good working order. You learn to maintain and operate your boat with greater confidence, so you and your passengers can more fully enjoy the on-the-water experience.

If something does go haywire, you’ll be in a far better position to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it, which can save you the time and money you’d otherwise spend on a tow or other on-water assistance. Familiarity with your boat’s systems also helps you determine which spare parts to carry and what tools are essential for minor repairs.

The MariSafe Do-It-Yourself Inspection is not intended to be a boat survey, but rather an equipment and conditions guide and checklist that help you identify areas needing attention to ensure that your boat is safe for you and your passengers and in compliance with the law.

Supplement to the Checklist
The DIY Inspection Guide is intended as a supplement to the DIY Inspection Checklist, providing information to help you understand what you’re looking for and why it’s important. For each numbered inspection item, the guide presents an overview, the legal requirements, inspection guidelines, and our recommendations.

The guide is organized as follows:

  • Section 1: Overall Boat Condition
  • Section 2: Equipment
  • Section 3: Onboard Systems
  • Section 4: Registration, Numbering & Documentation

We recommend that you download, print and read the Guide, then print out the Checklist, taking both to your boat when you perform your inspection.
